As unemployment has surged to historic levels during the past month, seniors graduating from the University of La Verne – with college seniors across the country –  are looking to a scary job market. 

With Max Azaria’s BCBG to be yet another consumer outlet to move entirely online, it is impossible to ignore the ever-growing trends of shopping in the online world. As major clothing companies begin to transition the way music, movies and books have, we can expect more stores to follow suit. While this hurts the job market, consumer pressure on retailers for convenience makes it impossible for stores to stay open with the increased online demand.

Students at the University of La Verne often choose to jump start their working careers early by picking up a part-time job during school in order to pay bills or for some extra cash.

I wish Michael Escañuelas had taken a bit more time to consider his words in “Life in the Unemployment Line."

One loses a small trace of dignity when working in retail; one loses a hell of a lot more when they are fired from retail. One loses all self respect when one can’t find a new job in retail because of a struggling economy.

For the first time since I was 16 years old, I am unemployed. "Unemployed." The word has such a harsh ring to it. It reminds me of my ex-boyfriend's dad, who did nothing all day on and off for years but sit around, collect government checks, drink beer and sleep. I know my predicament is not quite as extreme, being that I spend 90 percent of my time, including free time, at school, but the word can still get you.
