President George W. Bush should be congratulated for finally unveiling the long-delayed road map for peace in the Middle East, which would establish a Palestinian state and end 31 months of violence.

For years the Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting for ownership of the Holy Land. And for years I have sat by apathetically, not really affected by their problems. I was basically disconnected from it all.

Perhaps the greatest war Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin ever fought was not as a general, but as a world leader seeking peace as the avenue to end his country’s suffering at the hands of its long-standing rivals, the Palestinians. This peace process was violently derailed on Saturday with Rabin’s assassination by a Jewish law student, Yigal Amir.
