Interim Provost Roy Kwon will relinquish the position as of Jan. 1, 2024, and will continue as vice provost of the University of La Verne, President Pardis Mahdavi announced via email Wednesday.
Kwon assumed the position as interim provost in April after replacing Kerop Janoyan, former provost and vice president of academic affairs, left the University.
Mahdavi said she received Kwon’s letter of intent to step down and return to his previous vice provost position on Tuesday. Kwon cited the well-being of his family and the La Verne community as his reasons.
“He’s a very talented leader, and a very brave leader who has a lot of vision,” Mahdavi said. “I’m excited to watch his career unfold because I think he will continue to be a leader in the higher ed space.”
Administration will be working to fill the position of interim provost while the national search for a permanent provost proceeds.
“We are working to identify somebody from the registry, who can come in and be a placeholder for six to seven months while we complete our search for the permanent provost, which has already begun,” Mahdavi said.
Kwon could not be reached for comment by press time Thursday.
The goal is to have a permanent provost by July 1, 2024, Mahdavi said.
