The men’s tennis team, supporting a 0-6 record, went into Tuesday’s match against Caltech with nothing to lose. But it did just that, lowering its record to 0-7 and 0-5 in conference play.
“We’ve got a young team that doesn’t have a lot of experience,” said Coach Reed Gratz. “And we don’t have a lot of numbers.”
The team consists of two freshman, Juni Hernandez and George Szkiba; two sophomores, Mylan Hart and Andy Stewart; junior Paul Moseley and senior Greg Hafif, who has two years of experience.
The Leos’ competition is definitely a contributing factor to their winless season.
“There are two teams in our conference that are nationally ranked, and a few others that contend with them,” said Gratz.
In Tuesday’s matches, Stewart put up the best fight losing 4-6, 3-6. Moseley and Hernandez played fair, being defeated 3-6, 2-6, and 2-6, 2-6, respectively. Hart was defeated 4-6, 0-6, while Hafif and Szkiba both lost 1-6, 1-6.
In doubles matches, Hafif and Moseley lost 1-6, won 7-6, and lost 4-6. Stewart and Hart fared worse losing 0-6,2-6, while the freshman duo of Hernandez and Szkiba were defeated 2-6,3-6.
Upcoming matches will be Saturday, March 7, on the Leos’ home courts against the University of Redlands and Wednesday, March 11, at Cal State San Bernardino. Both matches will begin at 2 p.m.
