As a student athlete at La Verne, I am bewildered by the statement of professor Rick Simon when he says, “Athletes receive certain benefits not afforded to the general student body.”

Imagine a rule existed stating art majors could not receive scholarship recommendations because art teachers are exempted from writing them due to an unfair rule? Well, this is happening to physical education majors at the University of La Verne.
Athletics programs at the University of La Verne may be in the NCAA’s Division III, but it is working towards gender equality in sports like many larger Division I and II programs.
Generations may differ in the way they dress, speak, think and act, but one thing they all have in common, especially in the University of La Verne’s history, is a firm devotion to athletics.
