This is the very first time I have ever responded to a article in any kind of written publication. But I was so outraged at your last week’s issue of the Campus Times, that I couldn’t let you guys get away with it without my valued opinion. I’ll make it short and simple: How can you not write an article on the La Verne baseball team’s huge three-game sweep over the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran, who’ve had La Verne’s number for years? Coach Owen Wright has been coaching the baseball team for centuries it seems, and at best, he has won one out of three, let alone a three-game sweep! This series was probably the biggest win of the baseball team since 1985 (when they were league champions), and not even one article? Not even a simple, puny box score? The funny thing is that you’ll probably have an article on La Verne’s tough three-game sweep over the mighty Beavers of Cal Tech this past week! Memorandum to the Campus Times… Get it together.

With regard to the opinion piece headlined “NCAA turns anti-student” (CT 2/24/95), I would like to update your facts.
NCAA Division III institutions do not grant scholarships based on athletics ability, so NCAA Bylaws prohibit athletics personnel from trying to influence the awarding of financial aid. Thus a student receiving a scholarship based in any part on a recommendation from somebody connected with athletics immediately loses eligibility for intercollegiate competition.
A non-athlete, however, may obtain recommendations from anyone. The student just needs to be aware that by getting a recommendation from physical education faculty, eligibility is compromised. (The Financial Aid policy has been corrected to reflect this interpretation.)
It may seem unfair that athletes are not afforded the same privileges as other students with regard to recommendations from professors in their major field. One answer to this complaint is that athletes receive certain benefits not afforded to the general student body and also face some extra restrictions.
As a partial remedy for this situation, I would encourage all students to try to develop a relationship with (and demonstrate their ability to) all their professors, not just those in the major field.
