A University of Redlands three game sweep of the University of La Verne's baseball team is something that many may have never expected, let alone fathomed. Expectations are sometimes too great however, and this last week La Verne has been picking up the pieces from a three game sweep by the Redlands squad.

Riding the momentum of the Caltech three game sweep, using aggressive hitting and solid pitching, the University of La Verne baseball team took two of three games from the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, but fell to the Chapman Panthers, losing 16-1, Tuesday night.

Clawing and roaring their way back to contention, the University of La Verne Leopards streaked past Caltech in three straight games to complete a series sweep of the Beavers.

After losing seven of its starters, the baseball team has a harvest of young, inexperienced players rebuilding a team that wants to be in the hunt for the Southern California Inter-Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championship.

Last spring, the University of La Verne baseball team completed its season with a 29-11 record overall and 15-6 in Southern California Inter­collegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), finishing third in the league. Although it received no post-season invitation, seven players did receive individual recognition.

In its final bid for the playoffs, the University of La Verne’s baseball team took third place in the Leo Invitational last weekend, defeating the University of Redlands 11-7 on Sunday afternoon and Chapman University on Saturday night, 4-2.
