Last spring, the University of La Verne baseball team completed its season with a 29-11 record overall and 15-6 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), finishing third in the league. Although it received no post-season invitation, seven players did receive individual recognition.
Catcher Bobby Sherwood, first baseman Pat Murray, outfielder David Madrid and shortstop Brock Whobrey were selected to the Division III All-West Region first team. Second baseman Mike Smith, and pitchers Andres Loya and Jeff Doen were selected to the second team. Whobrey was also selected as a third team All-American.
Sherwood, Murray, Smith, Doen and Madrid were seniors and will not return next season. Sherwood, who played for ULV for one season, was thankful for ending his college baseball playing career as a Leopards.
“I enjoyed playing with the guys last season. I’m looking forward to helping out this season before I get ready to play again,” he said.
Sherwood will continue playing minor league ball in the Independent League.
Head coach Owen Wright had plenty of compliments for Sherwood.
“He started out a little slow but he really broke loose at the end of the season. He had the potential to be an All-American,” he said.
Although Whobrey was ULV’s only All-American this year, he is sure to pick up where he left off last season. Coming into his senior year, Whobrey has been an all-conference player every year and had most recently batted an impressive .380 last season.
