The University of La Verne golf team turned in its best finish ever in the Division III National Championships last week with a sixth-place performance at the PGA at Oak Valley in Beaumont, Calif.

It’s easy to eat, sleep and breathe golf when you grow up at the golf course. And for University of La Verne senior Joey Murray, that was how he was introduced to his passion for golf.

Riddled by single-hole and back-nine falters and the haunting memories of past national letdowns, the University of La Verne golf team has pieced together a lukewarm performance to grind itself into seventh place at 44 over par total, 5 over through nine holes at press time yesterday in the fourth and final round of this year’s national tournament at the PGA at Oak Valley in Beaumont, Calif.

The mascot for the University of Redlands is a bulldog, but for the University of La Verne golf team, it may as well have been a monkey, a monkey that has decided to attach itself to the team’s collective back for the past two years.

With victories this week over conference-titan University of Redlands and Claremont, the University of La Verne golf team took one step closer to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.
