California Senate Bill 1233, which would address the issue of overcrowding in animal shelters through the use of low- and no-cost spay and neuter services, has been approved by the legislature and awaits Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature.

La Verne has bitten off more than it can chew with students who have transferred to the University from other institutions this semester. The problems of unusually large class sizes — combined with a lack of physical space to house classes, cars, etc. — went from bad in fall 2012 to worse this spring.

As the year comes to a close, we are saying goodbye to President Steve Morgan, who has been leading the University of La Verne for the last 26 years. On July 1, President-Select Devorah Lieberman will take over and begin her presidency.

In the fall of 2010, the University of La Verne welcomed approximately 543 freshmen and 228 transfer students, bringing the total undergraduate enrollment to 1,894 students.

University of La Verne students returning for the spring semester have been met with more than 120 fewer parking stalls and overfilled classes. The combination of new dorm construction removing parking lots and a sharp increase in spring 2011 new enrollments has compounded our growing pains, straining advisers and leaving some newbies feeling lost.

According to the Office of Institutional Research, as of Dec. 31, 2001, the University of La Verne has experienced a 44 percent increase in student enrollment since 1989. ULV is growing in popularity among high school seniors in Southern California. Its diversity of programs attract these students onto our campus, but the University fails to provide them with adequate accommodations.
