In the frantic final days of the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan following 20 years of war, American troops helped evacuate about a half million refugees, mainly Afghan soldiers and civilian contractors, along with their families.

Students, faculty and staff gathered Sept. 26 when Professor of Business Administration and Economics Ahmed S. Ispahani gave an informal lecture that focused on the way the Islamic world is viewed today.

The emergence of the "American Taliban" this week has created another sticky situation for the government to deal with, not to mention given fuel to "Saturday Night Live" (how can they pass it up?) The lingering debate that will no doubt continue for some time is, what should be done with John Walker?

Since the events of Sept. 11, I have been dumbfounded by the arguments of those who advocate non-violence at this juncture ["Letters to the Editor," Nov. 30].

Just short of 60 years after Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke before congress declaring war on Japan, George W. Bush stood before congress on Sept. 20 and made promises to rid the world of the evil which perpetrated the murders of more than 6,000 innocent people in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania with something he has declared as a war on terrorism.

The Los Angeles Times could not have explained the situation any better when it reported in its Sept. 16 issue, "Amid the grieving for thousands of American victims of terrorism and the clamor for revenge, the fate of two U.S. aid workers imprisoned in Afghanistan has all but been forgotten."
