The Campus Times and La Verne Magazine each enjoyed its best performance ever in the prestigious Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Gold Circle Awards, announced recently in New York City. The two publications won a total of 10 Gold Circle Awards in a nation-wide journalism competition sponsored by Columbia University and College Media Advisers, Inc.

The Campus Times won the Sweepstakes award at the 48th annual California Intercollegiate Press Association (CIPA) convention last weekend, earning the paper the distinction of being the best weekly college newspaper in the state.

University of La Verne communications students and publications have earned awards from two top journalism organizations in recent contests.

Controversy over location and a lack of support for last year’s proposal for a mural celebrating diversity on campus has caused artists Lisa Scott and Yasuyuki Nagasawa to lose the passion and inspiration they originally felt and abandon the project.

Through various activities and opportunities, a student attending the University of La Verne will be exposed to local, national and international diversity. This is not in question. This institution serves a population that is socially, ideologically and ethnically diverse. The question is, however, does this institution really promote and encourage the understanding and appreciation of that diversity? “Promote” and “encourage” are words that demand action.

Furnished with cracked cement floors, weathered beams and empty walls, the Baum Building basement will be brought to life with creativity for the senior thesis art exhibit, "Elements of a Passing Vision," beginning tonight with a reception from 5-10 p.m.
