The John Mainiero Arts Institute is a new program that will bridge the University of La Verne and the Bonita Unified School District.
This program is in honor of John “Skip” Mainiero, the former vice-president of administration and finance, who died in July of 1993.
“The program is dedicated to teaching students through the arts,” said secretary to the treasurer, Dorothy Joines.
The program will kick off tonight with a Jazz Symposium. A group of professional musicians will play with students from Bonita High School tonight and tomorrow night.
The Bonita students will have the opportunity to attend workshops before tomorrow’s concert.
A jazz music course will be offered to Bonita Unified School District students during January interterm at ULV. This course will be taught by Mainiero’s son Andy, who is the director of instrumental music at Bonita High School and Ramona Middle School.
Courses will also be offered at ULV to the high school students during the fall semester of 1995.
Some of the fall classes will be offered for college credit. Opportunities will include workshops, clinics, concerts, art shows and theater productions at ULV.
“The Institute is a bridge between high school and college. It gets high school students interested and gives them a feeling of college,” said Ruth Trotter, associate professor of art.
“It is musical events at this point, but as it grows there will be more art and theater,” said Trotter.
Jazz Symposium ‘94 will take place tonight and tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in Founders Hall Auditorium. Tickets are $10.
