Due to a poor response by the student body, there will no longer be a $20 key deposit for the new student mailboxes.
The mailbox keys were first issued on Monday, Oct. 23, and within four days, the deposit requirement was reversed.
“We have decided to waive the deposit fee for this year, until we can find a smoother process,” said Melissa Jaunal, coordinator of student programs, who is in charge of student mail.
According to Jaunal, the decision to waive the deposit requirement was made for a number of reasons.
“All full-time students are required to have a mailbox and not a lot of students were paying the money for a key,” she said.
“I think they were wasting their time in the first place and they finally realized it,” said junior Kirk Leggit.
Student Accounts decided to make a special account for the key deposits, but with this another problem arose.
Students were writing checks for the deposit, because they were told the checks would be held and only cashed if the student key was lost.
“This special account would require all checks received from students to be tendered, and some of those checks probably don’t have $20 behind them,” Jaunal said.
Students are now able to pick up their mailbox keys by showing their I.D. card at the mailbox facility.
“I didn’t want to pay the $20 in the first place. We pay enough money already. Anymore would be ridiculous,” said senior Monickie Addison.
“We will probably experience some budgetary loss, but we don’t know exactly how much,” Jaunal said.
All deposits that had been received will be returned by mail to students.
She added that a memo will be sent to all students next week detailing the change.
