Raj Iyengar, a part-time faculty member in the School of Business and Economics, was arrested May 1 at his home in Alhambra on suspicion of burglary by La Verne Police Department (LVPD) Detective Nick Paz.
An investigation by the University of La Verne security and LVPD into computer thefts in the faculty offices of the School of Business and Economics resulted in the arrest.
“We put cameras in to see who was doing the stealing,” said Paz. The video showed the removal of one computer from the faculty offices by Iyengar. The video cameras were set up by LVPD, ULV security and Doug Waite, audio-video coordinator.
“A search warrant was served on his house where the computer was found,” said Paz. “He was arrested. That night he posted $15,000 in bail and was released.”
“I put ID marks on the equipment left in the room,” said Waite, who went to Alhambra. “LVPD took me to ID the equipment and look for other stolen property.”
“We also searched his computer store and found one piece of equipment without serial numbers which was taken into custody,” said Paz.
“He has resigned his position at ULV and is no longer teaching as a part-time faculty,” President Stephen Morgan said.
“The University has experienced some thefts recently and they are actively working to stop these thefts in conjunction with LVPD,” said Paz.
“We are doing something as Public Safety with LVPD about computer theft on campus,” said Tom Erickson, temporary director of public safety. “This is one case where a lead panned out.”
