Spring semester’s Campus Activities Board events got off to a slow start at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7, with a billiards tournament in Leo’s Den.
There were around 20 people filtering in and out of Leo’s Den, while only six people actually attempted to play in the tournament.
Once students wandered in, a few gathered around to see what was going on. A couple even stuck around to see who won the tournament.
“It’s going better than last year,” said Kristina Vaughn, CAB Games and Recreation/ Intramural Sports Chair. “It didn’t help that we didn’t have a lot of time to publicize it.”
Despite the low attendance, the students that were there seemed to be enjoying themselves.
“This event is awesome,” junior criminology major Edgar Ramirez said. “The obstacle set by the quality of the pool table made the event that much more thrilling and challenging.”
Through a series of unforeseen events, senior Andy Monroy won the tournament. What made his win interesting was that he won all three of his games when his opponents scratched while shooting their final shot to sink the eight ball.
With each win Monroy just laughed and shrugged off his victory as if he knew it was just his good luck kicking in.
“It’s just a sign, God wanted me to win,” Monroy said, “It feels pretty good, I’m not gonna lie.”
The other finalist, Political Science major Shanae Diaz just laughed off her loss.
“I knew I was gonna scratch, but I just didn’t know how to stop it,” Diaz said.
