Professor of Biology Jeff Burkhart had maintained a kind of outdoor laboratory, a biotic environment, in the fountain located in the Johnson Family Plaza. On two consecutive days, Sept. 19 and Sept. 20, someone put detergent into the water. Burkhart said that the detergent killed what life was remaining in the fountain. The fountain was used as a resource for the biology department, providing a space for specimens for botany and zoology classes. This fountain was the only fountain on campus capable of supporting biotic diversity. It is still unknown who dumped detergent in the fountain. / photo by Jasmin Miranda
