Dear Editor,
This is an open letter to all the fraternities and sororities.
It’s beginning to make me sick to watch all the animosity and hatred exhibited within your segregated organizations. The recent violent episode of defacing the famous ULV Rock has clearly shown how immature, ridiculous, and useless these hierarchical and separatist groups are. The “brotherhood” and “sisterhood” of the University of La Verne Greeks tarnishes the reputation of this institution. Currently, I see nothing positive from the perspective of an outsider. The Greek system is pointless on such a small campus, because it overshadows everything else the University represents. It is impossible for the average student, concerned with academics, to escape that barrage of Greeks encompassing our small campus. I transferred to this University for an education and to earn my degree. Furthermore, I feel the Greeks have a hidden agenda that is centered around meaningless gatherings rather than scholastics. I acknowledge that there are many individuals within these organizations that truly seek to further themselves socially and academically, however recently it does not appear that way. The University of La Verne is a liberal arts institution and should be cherished, not exploited by “bad apples” that represent the Greeks. We are here to learn from one another and grow, not to hate each other. This week was an opportunity for the Greeks to collaborate with one another in peaceful competition, yet not one day went by before uneducated violence was expressed. Grow up before the ax falls upon you all.
