The University of La Verne debate team started the new season on fire, winning a national championship in the 2006 United States Universities National Open Debate Tournament last weekend at Occidental College.

Seven teams from the University of La Verne battled against 48 teams from schools throughout the nation, including Harvard and Yale, in early April at the U.S. Universities Debating Championships, held at Claremont McKenna College.

Ian Lising, assistant professor of speech communications and debate, has wise bespectacled eyes, a warm and inviting smile and an aura of peace and serenity.

With its largest base ever, the University of La Verne debate team is making history this year. The team is headed by not one, but two captains and to top it off, they are both women.
