Cal Poly Pomona and the University of La Verne’s Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Pomona Valley Alumnae Chapter ended February with a bang as it held the 27th Annual Black Culture Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Pomona Civic Center Plaza. With the help of the Pomona Public Library, the event celebrated African American culture.

The urban-esque and smooth, danceable beats of Latin jazz band Chevere echoed through the streets of the Pomona Arts Colony, beckoning people from all walks of life into the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center where an opening reception for “Tres Mundos: Tres Expreciones” was held Saturday night.

They’re orange, round and thousands of them will become decorations for the upcoming Halloween celebrations. You guessed it; they’re pumpkins.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc., with the help of University of La Verne’s Greek advisor Chip West, is on its way to being an established Greek-letter council with the establishment of two of its nine organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Although this area of Pomona is not so vast, the amount of creativity within its borders is astounding.

The University of La Verne women’s volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday night to Division II opponent Cal Poly Pomona, 3-0, in the Darlene May Gymnasium.
