Today is the last day in a two week period for University of La Verne adjuncts to vote on whether they want to unionize.

The Service Employees International Union last week filed a lawsuit against the University of La Verne citing five unfair labor practice charges the suit claims are designed to thwart ULV adjunct faculty’s unionization efforts.

Regarding merit pay for faculty, I’d like us to slow down and to think carefully about the following points.

A new policy is in the works to raise faculty wages based on their performances in teaching, research and professional service.

The University of La Verne adjunct faculty filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board Oct. 28, the first step toward possibly unionizing through the Service Employees International Union. Step two will be a vote to see if 51 percent of adjuncts favor unionization.

University administrators will launch phase two of the La Verne Experience – the sophomore experience – in the fall of 2014. The Sophomore La Verne Experience, or SOLVE, will essentially be a two-unit course centered around student involvement.
