The Brethren Hillcrest continuing care retirement community in La Verne has elected its Board of Directors for 1997. Dr. Donald Clague recently retired as professor of educational management at the University of La Verne and was elected chair of Hillcrest's Board of Directors. The vice chair of the Board is Marvin V. Snell, M.D., partner in U.S. Family Care in San Dimas.

After a lengthy battle against cancer, La Verne Burns died on Sept. 3 at approximately 5 p.m. at Hillcrest Convalescent Home in La Verne.

I started taking some walks during the day to stay awake. I walked by Hillcrest Homes where the World War I generation has retired. I saw elderly ladies sitting in their living rooms hold­ing cups of tea, laughing and talking. They seemed very aware of the world around them and content to be in it.

“Whatever the customer decides they are worth to him or her is accepted as payment.” This is the policy of a unique bookstore that has become a safe haven for many senior citizen residents of Hillcrest Homes in La Verne who have outlived their financial resources.

Symbolizing peace and friendship, the City of La Verne hosted Dr. Arthur Nicolaevich Chilingarov, vice president of Russian parliament on Mon­day.
