The fumble came on the Whittier 38-yard line. The University of La Verne football team had had a difficult time all night holding on to the ball. On the most pivotal play in the game, it set the Poets up for the 60-yard pass that gave them the lead and the win, 20-17, in the season-closing game the Leopards led from the beginning.
Homecoming games always bring out a large number of fans, but the tradition of great battles between the University of La Verne and the Redlands Bulldogs brought the makings of an exceptional showdown.
A sub-par performance by the University of La Verne football team allowed Occidental College to upset the Leopards 21-10 Saturday at Ortmayer Stadium, a loss not taken lightly by La Verne head coach Don Morel.
