Spot renovation initiated

Plans are coming together for the renovation of The Spot, although exact costs and dates of implementation are not yet known.

A preliminary remodeling plan has already been designed by an Aramark architect. The proposed buffet-style layout would make The Spot more spacious, allowing for more food items to be offered. Armen Ananian, director of food services for the University, said he hopes this will appeal more to non-traditional and graduate students, who have no other place to eat on campus than The Spot.

The new set-up will allow for more hot and refrigerated foods and also include a grill for basic hamburger and hot dog preparation. The hope is to eventually encompass outdoor seating.

The Spot was originally designed in 1985 by Director of Facilities Management Brian Worley as a small snack bar. Worley and Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Loretta Rahmani agree that the area has simply outgrown itself.

“The renovation needs to happen for better servicing of the students,” said Dr. Rahmani.

However, before any work can begin, an overall Student Center plan still needs to be created, taking into account the now vacant area of the old mailboxes and the changes brought about by departmental moves.
