Traveling to Washington to take on new opponents, the University of La Verne women’s soccer team took on Evergreen State College on Tuesday and the University of Puget Sound on Wednesday for the first time in history. The Leopards came away victorious, sweeping their opponents with defense.
Against Evergreen State the Leopards scored first on a goal from sophomore transfer Jennifer Barnes. After Evergreen State retaliated with a goal of its own the rest of the match was scoreless until the fifth minute of overtime.
In the fifth minute of overtime, junior Angel Mejico worked her offensive magic. The same magic which she possessed a year ago when she led the Leopards in scoring as a sophomore.
This game was a big victory because it was the first ever match at Evergreen State, but more importantly it was the first match of the year for the Leopards.
On Wednesday, the Leopards took on the University of Puget Sound to try and remain undefeated.
When the Leopards came to Puget Sound they were undefeated at 1-0 and nothing changed when they left as the Leopards defeated a very physical Puget Sound team, 1-0.
The Leopards played solid defense and senior sweeper Amber Hall led the charge.
“They played with intensity through the whole game,” said head coach Wendy Zwissler. “When the other team was pressing we kept our composure and regained possession.”
The winning goal came at the 84:11 mark of the game off the head of freshman Kelly Black.
The Leopards next match is at home tomorrow at 7 p.m. against Southwestern. On Wednesday, La Verne opens SCIAC play hosting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 4 p.m.
