Jay Jones, professor of biology and biochemistry, told roughly 25 people to reconnect with nature, reinvest in quality education and reduce the excessive use of palm oil Tuesday in the President’s Dining Room. 

Marcus Eriksen, co-founder of 5 Gyres Institute, sailed from Long Beach to Hawaii on a raft kept afloat with plastic bottles to raise awareness about plastic pollution in marine environments. Eriksen shared his story, the organization’s discoveries about plastic pollution, and its effect on marine life with an audience of 40 people Friday in LaFetra Lecture Hall as part of the annual Robert and Mary Neher Global Sustainability Lecture.

One hundred fifty bright orange solar powered Spin bicycles arrived on campus April 5 in front of Miller Hall. As part of a new bike sharing program at La Verne, the wheels are available to students for 50 cents every half hour or $14 per month with unlimited use.  Spin, founded in San Francisco in 2016, offers an affordable and environmentally-friendly form of personal mobility. Each bike is equipped with solar powered lights and foam wheels to mitigate maintenance issues.  Lisa Grater, transportation services manager, introduced this program to La Verne and said she wants everyone on campus to take ownership of the program to encourage its success.

The University of La Verne has reached its “2020 Strategic Vision” fundraising goal of a $100 million endowment. But fundraising efforts have not offset the financial problems caused by the sudden dip in enrollments this academic year at the tuition dependent University.

Professors from the natural sciences presented “Faraday Rotation of Magnetic Nanoparticles” Tuesday in the President’s Dinning Room.

A black bear was hit by a car along the 210 freeway near Fruit Street in La Verne and was later euthanized by wildlife officials Monday.
