With news channels in all-war-all-the-time mode, it's hard to miss the play-by-play media coverage of the controversial Gulf War II, thanks to the Pentagon's clever program of embedding reporters with America's troops.

La Verne residents, students and faculty paused for 15 minutes Monday to watch the solemn speech by President Bush during which he gave Saddam Hussein the final ultimatum to relinquish power or face war.

Good satire is hard to find these days, so I for one especially appreciated Andrew Barton's lampoon of right-wing bluster and illogic in the Feb. 28 issue ["Letters to the Editor"].

I do not ascribe to any organized religion. While my family is Catholic, I have chosen to be a religiously and spiritually independent soul.

I have gone diligently to church every Sunday for as long as I can remember, and even longer still. And never has a moment struck me as so absurd, touching, lasting, confusing(the adjectives can go on) as the five-second encounter that occurred one recent Sunday.

As a former U.S. Marine and Desert Storm veteran, I must ask for those who feel compelled to seek war and aggression as the answer to think again.
