Robert Rodriguez, head of campus security, has been out of work since September due to a health condition.
Rodriguez suffered from an enlarged aorta. He went into the hospital to have a piece removed and replaced.
Rodriguez spent 10 days in the hospital before returning home. Doctors said it would take six to eight weeks to recover.
Rodriguez says he is starting to become active. He walks from his house to the corner and back a couple times a day, he has been shopping and he attended a council meeting last week. Rodriguez is a member of the La Verne City Council.
“I get very tired easy,” said Rodriguez.
People who know Rodriguez have shown their support for him. They have sent him flowers, cards and books. “I read a lot. It makes me feel good when a lot of people care about me,” said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez still keeps in touch with the security officers on campus and hopes that it remains quiet, safe and nice.
He does not want security to have to carry batons or guns like past security people have done.
Rodriguez is looking forward to returning to work in about two or three weeks. “I am looking forward to returning. I miss the people, place and the students. When I get back, watch out,” said Rodriguez.
