The University of La Verne golf team lost to the University of California, San Diego and Chapman College in a three team tournament in La Verne on Monday. The overall score for the Leos in the game was 3 and 41, as opposed to UCSD’s score of 3 and 22, and Chapman’s 3 and 25.

The loss gave La Verne an overall record of 2-1.

Senior Victor Bugni shot a 75 in Monday’s match at the Sierra La Verne golf course. This was the lowest average of the day for the team.

Senior Greg Maher, who led the team to a victory against Occidental on March 1 with a low of 74, said, “We did horrible on Monday, but Victor held his own. He did really well.”

Head Coach Rex Huigens said, “We were all disappointed with the way we played on Monday. We are trying to get more consistent and play up to our capabilities.”

“It’s a good thing Monday’s loss was early in the season,” said junior Ryan Bazela.

The team left yesterday to participate in the Southern California Collegiate Championships at Torrey Pines in San Diego. The weekend event, held today and tomorrow, includes teams from 18 different colleges.

“If we all play pretty well in the championships, we can win the league,” said Maher, “but it’s just a matter of all of us doing it.”
