An open letter to the University of La Verne community submitted to the Campus Times yesterday afternoon by Delta Sigma Phi offers apologies to various organizations on campus, as well as an open invitation to a community picnic to be held Thursday, May 1.
The fraternity promises to “change our ways and learn to deal with the ULV community in a more respectful and dignified manner.”
Not only does Delta Sigma Phi extend apologies to all the fraternities and sororities on campus, but to Sigma Alpha Epsilon in particular, “whose character and person we have repeatedly attacked without provocation.”
“The brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon have maintained an air of dignity in the face of blatant attacks from us and should be admired for their discipline and gentlemanly nature,” the letter said.
Apologies were also extended to school administrators, as well as to the sisters of all three sororities on campus, including Iota Delta, Sigma Kappa and Phi Sigma Sigma, for what the fraternity described as “rude and brash behavior.”
Delta Sigma Phi also promised that “in the spirit of reconciliation” it would immediately implement a “ten step process for reform” which would include reviewing the role alcohol plays in the fraternity, applying a standards board to oversee fraternity activities and disciplining any brothers of Delta Sigma Phi who do not uphold the “heightened image” of the fraternity.
The picnic will be held in an attempt to make amends for the actions of the fraternity during Greek Week, actions that led to the cancellation of the rest of the week’s events.
In addition to the picnic will be a drug and alcohol seminar tentatively scheduled for the third week of May.
“We time this seminar so as to avoid any tragedies which may result from excessive alcohol consumption during the final weeks of school and the graduation celebrations that go with the season,” the letter said.
