On Tuesday, the University of La Verne Department of Music presented a PianoFest Dedication Concert in Founders Hall Auditorium, which featured a chamber quintet composed of musicians Timothy Durkovic, piano; Kristine Whitson Hedwall, violin; Lyndon Johnston Taylor, violin; John Hayhurst, viola; and Wilhelmina Smith, cello.
The program, which included the pieces “Piano Quintet in E-Flat Major, Op. 44” by Robert Schumann and “Piano Quintet in F Minor” by Cesar Fanck, was highlighted by Hedwall’s solo on the violin.
Hedwall, who currently plays with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, began studying music when she was four years old and soon after began her performing career. She has traveled on tours throughout Europe and most recently won a position with Orange County’s Pacific Symphony, which lead to her current position with the Philharmonic.
“The music she played was incredible,” Ross Mathews said. “I became completely enveloped by the music she played; it really captured me and sent me on a voyage.”
The concert also featured Taylor on the violin. Taylor, who plays for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, is the principal second violinist and is on the faculty at La Sierra University and University of Southern California.
He comes from a family of musicians dubbed the “Osmonds of the classical world,” and has performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad.
The evening also featured Smith, who is a nationally and internationally recognized musician, as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician.
