The University’s new Friendship Club held its first event, “Bad Art Night” on March 6, with 11 attending.
The club was founded by sisters Jazmin Jacamo, sophomore business major, and Jaelynn Jacamo, freshman business major and vice president, club president and vice president respectively.
The sisters had started a similar friendship club in high school.
“When I first came to La Verne as a freshman, I already knew I wanted to start a friendship club,” Jazmin Jacamo said.
She said getting the club going here was an involved process.
The club became official two days before its first event.
The first event with an “unartistic” painting contest, free ice cream and free bracelets had a loose famous painting theme, with creative liberties, club leaders explained.
Participants tried to recreate Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” and Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night.”
Pop music played while participants emulated the masters, or tried.
Jennifer Jared, writing instructor and the club’s faculty advisor, also attended the event.
Jaelynn Jacamo said the club homes to bring people together and connect with the Friendship Foundation, which organizes social activities for people with disabilities.
“Our goal is to expand as much as we can, try to find volunteer opportunities for students to be a part of within the Friendship Foundation,” Jaelynn Jacamo said.
“I want it to be a more diverse and inclusive environment because usually there is a gap that is unspoken between neurodivergent peers,” Jazmin Jacamo said.
The Friendship Club meets Thursdays.
