From 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Oct. 17, I attended the first ever Sadie Hawkins Sock Hop dance put on by the Campus Activities Board in the new gym.
“The Sock Hop was very fun and a unique idea,” Ashley Mendez, a junior psychology major said.
The dance included an awesome disk jockey along with fruit and drinks for students to snack on.
The gym was decorated with lights illuminating the ceiling and walls along with balloons scattered on the floor.
“The decorations were really cool, they played great music and I loved all the balloons on the ground,” Mendez said.
The required attire for the dance was any type of socks. There were people in socks with themes, socks for the seasons and people even came with tube socks.
There was an array of socks dancing on the floor all night long.
CAB took everyone’s shoes at the door, put them in bags and handed out numbered tickets that matched with the bag number your shoes were put in.
They have never had a Sadie Hawkins dance before. For the first ever ‘Sock Hop’ I thought they had a great turn out. There were about 100 people that attended.
Even though the gym isn’t that big it didn’t feel as though the room was empty.
There were plenty of people out their dancing and having a good time.
“I thought this was a fun idea. We usually don’t have anything like this and it added a great dynamic to have the dance in the new gym,” Allison Wuillay a senior accounting major said. “It was a great place to have it because it was very spacious so it gave a lot of room for people to dance and just hang out.”
“I wore my long socks from when I used to play volleyball,” Wuillay added.
The DJ did a great job with the mix of music. There was never a break in music and he accommodated everyone’s song requests. He played everything from R&B to a little bit of salsa.
“The DJ for the dance was great. He played all up to date music,” Antoinette Borders, a junior criminology major said. “I had so much fun dancing to all the songs and dancing with all my sisters.”
“I wore purple and pink stripped knee high socks,” Borders added.
At a traditional Sadie Hawkins dance, the women ask the men, but on Wednesday this was not the case. Everyone came in groups and just wanted to have a good time without the pressure of finding a date. I went with all of my sorority sisters.
“The dance was so much fun because I got to just hang out and dance with my sisters,” Jessica Vergara, a junior movement and sport science major said. “My favorite part was when the Sigma Kappas got Chip West, the director of student life, to come out and dance to Britney Spears’ new song.”
This was a fun event for people to get out of their rooms and out of the classroom to hang out with their friends and have fun. I had a great time dancing and just hanging out with my friends. I hope that CAB continues this event next year.
