Often overlooked, the ULV golf team is shining brightly this spring through its strong performances. After a roller coaster week, the Leopards are 4-1 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play, and 4-3 overall.
“We’re pretty excited about this season,” said Coach Rex Huigens.
They finished a disappointing low Tuesday at the Kingsmen Classic. Sixteen teams competed in the meet. While some teams were from out of state, a large contingency of SCIAC teams were present.
“It wasn’t a conference match, that’s the good news,” said Huigens. “We didn’t play well and no one was happy with their performance.”
The tournament posed great problems for La Verne due to windy conditions.
“Greg Maher had one pretty good round of 81. That’s a good score considering the conditions,” he said.
La Verne competed at El Prado Park against SCIAC leader Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday.
“They may be the second-best team in the district,” said Huigens.
The Leopards lost, 319-308, usually a winning score for the Leos, but against the Stags it was not enough.
The Leos’ next match is a non-conference contest against Chapman College at Tustin Ranch Country Club Monday at 1 p.m.
