The University of La Verne women’s soccer team became ringmasters Wednesday night at Ben Hines Field, when it tamed the Occidental Tigers in a 6-0 spanking.
“I think we’ve learned a lot, not only in our skills, but they are learning to understand and anticipate each other,” said Wendy Zwissler, head coach.
Before the sun went down in the first half, the Leopards found the back of the Tigers’ vulnerable goal three times.
La Verne dominated the first half with good passing and defense, which enabled the ball to stay in Occidental territory.
“The midfield kept the pressure on their defense, and we really closed down their passing lanes,” said coach Zwissler.
The first goal came when freshman forward Erica Borbon scored with only 1:39 having expired from the game clock.
Borbon’s goal was quickly followed by freshman defenseman Giselle Ortega’s goal at 10:32 and sophomore midfielder Katie Zwissler’s score at 16:11.
One could hardly blame Occidental goalie Christina Burbank for all six goals, but it was inevitable that ULV would score.
This is so, because the Leopards took 29 shots on goal to the Tigers four throughout the span of the game.
In fact, the Leopards dominated the ball so well that La Verne freshman goalie Kim Schrepfer did not have to make a single save.
The Leopards’ dominance picked-up where it left off in the first half, when Zwissler scored on a header on a crossing pass from sophomore forward Rachel Lieberman with 47:15 having been played.
The Leopards mirrored their first half efforts, as freshman forward Noelle Hughes (69:46) and sophomore defenseman Robin Haaker (83:10) managed to penetrate the Tigers goal following the Zwissler score.
La Verne lost to Pomona-Pitzer, 2-0, Saturday.
The Leopards play at Whittier tomorrow at 11 a.m.
