After announcing his retirement in May, Director of Campus Safety and Transportation John Lentz recently decided to stay with the University of La Verne on a part-time basis.
“The students are great and it’s a really nice place to work, but I think I’ve done my duty from a full-time aspect,” Lentz said.
Following a seven-week vacation, Lentz met with University Executive Vice President Phil Hawkey.
The two agreed that Lentz would stay on since no replacement had been hired.
The department is currently looking for an assistant for Lentz.
During his vacation the director of campus safety for the Claremont Colleges came here as a consultant to evaluate the services of the department.
“One of the things that the consultant did recommend is that there be an assistant to the director,” Lentz said.
Lentz, a retired police chief, who has worked since 1996, believes he should be out on campus to provide the students a feeling of security but with all the work he must do he finds himself at his desk the majority of his time.
“It’s just too much for one person to do,” he said.
“My vision is that part of my job is to be out on campus meeting with people, having people see that there is a director here and that is an important part of the job,” he added.
