Xiaoyan Liu, professor of mathematics, celebrated her 33-year journey with University of La Verne and her pending retirement at the end of this academic year, during a talk Tuesday in the Quay Davis Executive Boardroom.
Alessandro Morosin, assistant professor of sociology and criminology, introduced Liu’s presentation, “My Last Lecture: The Lessons I Have Learned.”
About 30 University community members attended.
Liu’s talk was personal and biographical, and she illustrated her talk by sharing pictures and taking the audience through the chapters of her life.
She said she had been excited for a career in math starting back in middle school thanks to an influential teacher.
The photos she shared illustrated the importance she placed on connections with students, and her fellow faculty members.
She also shared her travels throughout Asia.
Liu said in retirement she plans to spend more time with family and continue her mathematics research.
Audience members shared their appreciation for Liu’s contribution.
“Before there were not many female faculty members, but Dr. Liu welcomed a lot of us and gave us a sense of belonging,” said Amy Jiang, professor and head of emerging technology digital initiatives at the University.”
