Creating an arena for alumni, friends of the University and current students to meet and reunite, the University Relations Office is hosting a golf and tennis tournament this month to raise money and build relationships.
On Monday, the third annual golf tournament was held at the Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas.
Participants were charged $125 for the day’s events, with all proceeds going into the University’s general financial aid fund.
“We thought it would be a fun way to bring contributors to the University,” said Mark Bagley, director of development, who was involved in planning the tournament. “It’s a good way to bring diverse people together.”
With the cost, participants received a day’s worth of golf, a golf cart, lunch, dinner, a bag of ULV memorabilia and were entered into a raffle with a variety of prizes. There were 125 people in attendance.
The tournament used a scramble format, where a four-person team is compiled and the best shot of everyone in the team is taken into account.
The first prize of a $50 gift certificate to Las Vegas Golf and Tennis Discount Shop went to each of the foursome of Dennis Assael, member of Corporate Associates and Assael BMW; Tony Fanticola, member of Corporate Associates from A. Fanticola Company which owns Jiffy Lube; Phil Minard, of Gross Investments; and Jim Wilfong, 1978 alumnus.
The Corporate Associates are donors to the University that contribute at the $1,000 level.
The second place prize of ULV pen, pencil and letter opener sets was awarded to Dr. Tom Harvey, dean of organizational management and city councilman; Ron Ingels, 1981 CAPA graduate and La Verne Police Department chief of police; Marty Lomeli, 1978 alumnus and city manager; and Andy Bergdale, friend of the University.
Prizes were also given to Bud Bagley for being the player closest to the pin, Roger Hanawalt, 1976 alumnus, for the longest drive in the male category; and Sheila De Graw, director of support services, for longest drive in the female category.
For the past three years car prizes were offered for holes in one, however it has never been won. This year the designated holes were 3 and 13. The prizes were a Buick and Jeep donated by Assael Motors in Monrovia and Jeep, Eagle, Chrysler, Plymouth of Ontario.
Alumni, friends and students of the University are also encouraged to take part in the tennis and racquetball tournament Saturday, May 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“It’s to get people together to have a good time back on campus,” said Donna Redman, director of alumni relations.
The tennis portion of the tournament will take place at the Nancy Blickenstaff Tennis Pavilion and will be organized by Redman. Bill Neill, 1962 alumnus, will be in charge of the racquetball competition at L.A. Fitness.
“It’s always been a real fun event,” Redman said.
This tournament has been played for the past 10 years and is looked forward to by the alumni.
“As long as people are interested, we’ll give them what they want,” said Redman.
The tournament is played in doubles with a $15 charge per person. The price covers registration, lunch and refreshments. Students interested in playing are charge $5.
“It’s to encourage them to get involved early for when they’re alumni they’ll come back and play,” she said.
Prizes for winners are donated by Dick Roberson, 1959 graduate, who is the the director of promotions and advertising for Penn Company. He also helps in running the tournament.
Six awards are given throughout the day. Three prizes are given to each men and women competitions.
