Men still looking for first win

The ULV men’s soccer team faces Claremont tomorrow on Ben Hines Field, trying to recuperate from the losing streak that plagued them this week against Pomona-Pitzer, Cal Baptist and Redlands.

The Leos opened Wednesday’s game against the Sagehens at a high peak when junior transfer Juan Contreras attempted a goal which hit the goal post. Senior Robert Perez retrieved the ball scoring the first goal of the game.

Later in the game, Pomona-Pitzer scored two goals consecutively, followed by a penalty kick awarded to Sagehen William Braxton. The first half ended with another goal for the Sagehens, leaving the score 4-1.

Sagehen Andrew Dilworth opened the second half with his second goal of the evening. The game finished with another goal and a penalty kick, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 7-1 victory.

“(The) game was an embarrassment to me. It is a result of a lack of quality practice,” said Head Coach Owen Wright.

The team did not have much success earlier in the week either. The Cal Baptist Lancers took all the glory and timed it just right, upsetting the Leos 3-0 Monday night.

The first half was full of fancy footwork by both teams, however neither had enough power to get the ball into position to score. Several attempts were made to score by Contreras, all of which were in vain.

Just when it seemed like it was going to be a no-score game, in the second half Cal Baptist came back with 15:02 left on the clock. Lancer Marcus Pachalian took two goals into Leo territory within two minutes, blowing away ULV sophomore goalie Matt Robles.

With two minutes left and a triumph secure, the Lancers played with the ball hoping to run down the clock so they could claim their victory. The Leos gave up a goal with 12 seconds remaining on the clock, giving Cal Baptist their third and final goal of the night.

The Leos also lost their game Saturday to the Redlands Bulldogs by a 2-0 score.

Tomorrow’s match against the Stags will begin at 11 a.m.
