As an alumnus of La Verne College, Michael Kremer hopes to bring a fresh new perspective to this year’s Lambda.
Kremer became the new adviser for the yearbook earlier this semester when Bernadine Judson resigned her position as adviser.
Judson said she was leaving for personal reasons. She wanted to spend more time with her children and found that it was hard to get to La Verne in the evenings from her home in Rancho Cucamonga to work on the yearbook.
“I have three boys and I coach soccer. I wanted to spend more time with them,” said Judson.
The yearbook staff was preparing its first deadline of the year when Judson told them that she was leaving, but they feel that she made the right choice for herself.
“We are going to miss Bern, but we’re gaining a good person,” said junior Ray Garza. “I know he’s very experienced, he’s an expert in his field.”
This is Garza’s second year on the yearbook staff. He said that the transition from one adviser to another has been good because Judson has helped Kremer and the entire staff with the deadlines.
Both Kremer and Judson teach at Etiwanda High School. Kremer teaches drama and Judson teaches journalism and English.
Judson recommended Kremer for the job after working with him on the Etiwanda yearbook and mentioned to him that she was thinking of leaving.
“We were just talking one day and she asked me if I would be interested in working on the yearbook at La Verne,” said Kremer.
Ruby Montaño-Cordova, associate dean of student affairs, hired Kremer after Judson told her that she was resigning and recommended Kremer for the job.
“I appreciate his philosophy,” said Montaño-Cordova.
Kremer has been teaching for 25 years, seven at Etiwanda, and graduated from La Verne College in 1969. While a student, he was a photographer for the Campus Times and also worked on the Lambda.
Montaño-Cordova expressed hope that Kremer will bring new ideas to the yearbook and its staff.
“In the future we might see a better yearbook,” said Montaño-Cordova.
Garza also expressed that Kremer will continue what Judson had started with the Lambda, “I think he’ll continue to keep the yearbook fun and exciting.”
