After the scandal that happened this year when the No. 1 ranked men’s volleyball team was denied an at-large berth at the Division III championships, steps are being taken to amend the selection process.
Head coach Jack Coberly has proposed that the university put in a bid to host the Division III National Championships and is waiting for final approval from the Athletic Department.
If La Verne hosts the championship next April, Coberly said that the team will have to fundraise because the cost will be a “minimum of $10,000.”
“The AVCA has been wanting a West Coast team to host the championships,” Coberly said. “Money is a big head turner because most Division III teams don’t have that much money around.”
Coberly is also lobbying to reconstruct the selection criteria. One major change he would like to see is a West/Midwest championship to determine which team gets a spot at nationals.
Currently, there are two East Coast league championships that determine spots at Nationals. An automatic bid is given to the host institution.
Coberly said that if there were to be a West/Midwest championship, then the team that goes to Nationals would be “decided on the court.”
