Approximately 80 University of La Verne students and faculty members were evacuated from the Wilson Library, Landis Academic Center and Learning Enhancement Center Wednesday morning when when fire alarms were set off.
The alarms, which began sounding their warnings at approximately 9 a.m., were apparently set off by blowtorches being used by roofers.
Safety Specialist Jeff Boster said that the heat and fumes from the torches likely traveled through the buildings’ ventilation shafts and were picked up by the smoke detectors inside.
A pair of La Verne city firefighters, who were out for their morning jog, assisted campus safety and maintenance officials in their response and helped determine that there was no immediate threat.
As a result, the buildings were reopened approximately 15 minutes later.
