“Detour to ULV,” an event for commuter students was held in conjunction with Spring Fair yesterday at the University Mall from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Commuter Fair is an event for the outside students to become involved with the University of La Verne’s campus.
The event was planned by Michael Houdyshell, coordinator of student activities and commuter programs, and junior Jaymel Capinpin with the goal that commuters will find time to enjoy ULV.
Houdyshell and Capinpin both said that they agreed not to use the mail system at ULV as a way to advertise the event because some commuters do not check their boxes too often.
“We want commuters to go to class and after roam around the school to see what is out there, [to] enjoy the environment,” said Capinpin.
Capinpin said that the Commuter Fair was an opportunity for commuter students to take a detour and enjoy.
The fair was not only strictly business, but also fun as well. It provided lunch and dinner along with prizes given away by KULV.
The Commuter Fair had various outside organizations, such as banks and insurance companies, along with ULV organizations including the Health Center, Learning Enhancement Center and Hanawalt House Counseling Center.
Capinpin said he felt the fair was a good way for commuters to become informed about the programs offered at ULV.
“By making the fair an all-day event, it gives the organizations an opportunity to provide more information to the students,” Capinpin said.
Houdyshell said, “This is a time for the students to take advantage of what the University has here for them.” He also said that there are many places that commuters do not even realize where they could spend their time while on campus.
This fair is the beginning of many activities being planned for commuters.
Houdyshell said he wanted the commuters to have a place where they could go and relax while waiting for class or to become involved with the ULV community.
Houdyshell said he is taking the initiative to lead ULV in making more events for commuters. “I would like to bring back the space that was at one time dedicated for commuters at ULV,” he said.
“It is great seeing that the school takes interest in all of its students,” said junior Anthony Granillo.
“I was happy to see that ULV is making more of an initiative to plan activities for the commuter students. I especially enjoyed the lazer tag,” said junior Ahmad Rasshan.
Houdyshell is hoping that with the outcome of the fair, they can plan a week for the commuters in the future.
