Now is an imperative time for students to start thinking about what classes they will take for the following semester. The task of registering for classes may be tedious because students encounter long lines in Woody Hall, and the fear that by the time their number is called, their class will be filled. The university has seen the chaos evolved out of pre-registration and has taken measures to improve the quality of registering so that on Nov. 6, the process for students will be a smooth one.
“Pre-registration is the process to allow students the opportunity to reserve your classes earlier for the next semester, without having to make a payment,” said Marilyn Davies, registrar.
Pre-registration will be for Interterm and Spring of 2001. For the first time, pre-registration will be spread out into two weeks, rather than the one week process that ULV has been conducting. The first week is for the seniors, juniors, honors and special need students; the second for sophomores and freshmen.
“We broke it out a little more so maybe students won’t have to feel that they have to come panic all together at one time, and won’t skip classes like they have been,” said Davies.
Barbara Schiller, director of academic advising, encourages students that once students receive their pre-registration that they look at their packets thoroughly and make an appointment as soon as possible with their academic adviser.
“Because ULV did not have large classes until the last three years, students could wait because it was not a big deal because they knew they were going to get their classes. But for the last three years we have been bringing record numbers of students in the summer time, and so we’ve had 450 students coming each year so classes are filling really fast. So if you don’t pre-register, the chances of getting your classes, at least the one you want, are not as good,” said Schiller.
Schiller goes on to state that anybody who plans to graduate in May 2001 needs to submit their application for commencement by the due date, Oct. 31. Also, it is imperative that any senior needing to take Core 320 or 340 come to pre-register at their designated time if they would like to be in the class, because these classes are very limited.
A bright colored flyer will be going out to students in their mailboxes on Oct. 27 to prepare for the pre-registration packets coming out on Oct. 31. The flyer will contain information to begin students preparing themselves and to make an appointment with their adviser.
Future plans to bring about a better quality of pre-registration to the students will be registration on the web.
