Publications gain new leadership

The current editorial director for the Campus Times, Katherine Hillier, will become Editor of La Verne Magazine. Tom Anderson, with four prior semesters of experience on the Campus Times, will assume the position of Editor in Chief for the newspaper in spring. Both want to spice things up by bringing a new sense of change and excitement into the press room. Spunk and enthusiasm are on next semester’s agenda as senior journalism majors Tom Anderson and Katherine Hillier were chosen as the new editors-in-chief for the Campus Times newspaper and the La Verne Magazine, respectively.

“I was really honored, to be honest, because there’s so much responsibility,” Anderson said. “It’s one of the most prestigious positions in the communications department.”

Hillier was full of excitement about her new position as well.

“I am absolutely thrilled to take on this fabulous position,” Hillier said. She has her associate’s degree in fashion design and is currently editorial director for the Campus Times.

Anderson has been an editor on staff for four semesters and is a 2006 winner of a Society of Professional Journalists scholarship. He has also written for the Pasadena Weekly, the VC Reporter and Auto Trim & Restyling News Magazine.

“Tom is a good journalist; he’s a real wordsmith with a lot of strength both in character and intellect,” said Elizabeth Zwerling, associate professor of journalism and Campus Times chief adviser.

Zwerling handpicked Anderson for his skilled writing and solid experience.

“He was the most experienced and most qualified of the people I was looking at,”  Zwerling said.

Hillier’s experience during her internship at Forbes Magazine in New York this summer gave her an insight into the real world, which she plans to incorporate into the magazine.

“I was lucky enough to intern at Forbes over the summer and got an insight into the magazine world,” Hillier said. “I want to bring a new sense of excitement to our magazine and I feel honored to have been chosen to do this.”

Randy Miller, adjunct professor of communications and La Verne Magazine adviser, chose Hillier not only for her experience, but for her leadership and positive attitude.

“She’s got this infectious enthusiasm, which will be an asset to the magazine staff,” Miller said.

Anderson agrees that humor and easiness is a necessity on staff.

“On top of my professionalism and dedication, I’ll also try to keep things light and in perspective,” Anderson said.

Keep watch of campus publications as these leaders venture out to give the press a twist.

“Every semester brings change, new excitement and challenges,” Zwerling said.
