Dr. Donald Bates, dean of the School of Business and Economics, resigned on April 18. He has served the University of La Verne since August, 1993.
According to President Stephen Morgan, Dr. Bates resigned to take a similar dean position at his alma mater, Indiana State University.
“He has done an outstanding job,” said Dr. Morgan. “I will hate to see him leave, but I understand this is a unique opportunity for him.”
Not only is it unique for Dr. Bates, but according to Dr. Morgan, it also moves Bates, his wife Rhonda and three children closer to family in the midwest.
Aside from teaching, Bates has served as a private consultant for the Bruinswick Corp. and Coca Cola Co. He has written several books and numerous papers and articles.
Dr. Bates came to ULV in an effort to reorganize the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. With his placement as dean, the school was renamed and refocused.
“My goal is to make the School of Business and Economics more market-driven by looking at business needs in the Inland Valley and aiming to meet those needs,” said Dr. Bates in the Sept. 17, 1993 issue of the Campus Times.
According to Dr. Morgan, he has tried to maintain the goal during his reign as dean and he hopes it will continue when Dr. Bates leaves.
He will remain as acting dean until the end of June. A search committee will start this summer looking to hire a new dean by next fall.
