Basketball teams wrap up seasons

The 1994-95 women’s basketball season was successful, according to Head Coach Julie Kline.

The women wrapped up their season last night against nationally-ranked Cal Lutheran. Last time the two teams met they went into double overtime. Unfortunately, La Verne lost 107-102.

“We are going into this game to win. There is a little fire in it because it is Rachell Auld’s last game,” said Kline prior to the game.

Last Tuesday the women dropped their 11th game of the year, 87-85, to Redlands. The Leopards played the game without three key players. Freshman Laura Czingula, sophomore Julie Gee and senior Lori McGhee were all released from the team because of violation of team policy. “The players adjusted well,” said Kline.

Kline feels that this year’s team was one of the most improved on a day-to-day basis. With great moments during the season, such as Auld hitting two free throws with 7.6 seconds left to beat Whittier, it showed that La Verne would not give up.

“I’m excited that the team never quit,” said Kline. She is also proud of the time, effort and commitment the team put in, including getting up for 5:30 a.m. practices.

“We played tough against very good teams. I think this year’s team put the La Verne women’s basketball program on the map,” she said. The Leos played Cal Lutheran, UC San Diego, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which are all nationally ranked teams, and competed well with all.

Most of the Leos’ offense this year was generated by the nation’s fourth leading scorer in Division III, junior Leslee Rogers. Auld also generated a lot of offense.

The men’s basketball team also wrapped up its season last night at Occidental. The Leos reached the century mark in their previous game on Mon­day when they beat Redlands, 104-71.

The team got off to a fast start by winning five of their first six games by an average of 29.6 points per game.

They fared very well outside of conference, but had their troubles in the SCIAC. The Leopards opened conference play with a blowout over Pomona-Pitzer, 90-69, but lost in overtime to Claremont-Mudd, 93-90.

A five-game winning streak was put together by the Leopards and things were going well after two victories in which they scored over 100 points. Pomona-Pitzer was next on the schedule. The winner would be in sole possession of first place.

The game was close throughout, but La Verne had trouble sinking free throws and running a productive offense down the stretch and lost 84-81.

Claremont-Mudd would come to town for the next game, a 69-67 loss that should have been avoided and put them further behind in the SCIAC.
