Indian club hopes to share culture

Aksheta Verma, a sophomore education major, has started a new Indian Cultural Association club, with the hope of bringing together Indian students and sharing Indian culture with the La Verne community.

A freshman, Verma was inspired to take action when she found she didn’t have a cultural club she identified with.

“The more people I ask, the more ideas I get for the club and how it could benefit others,” Verma said.

Kimberly Martin, professor of anthropology and adviser to the club, said that the club will provide ways to connect with another American ethnic group.

The club will meet once a month, and will participate in traditional events as well as visiting cultural locations.

Members will attend concerts featuring Indian artists, attend Bhangrah dancing shows and dine at Indian restaurants.

“Another way to be proud of your culture is to learn about it,” Verma said.

Verma said looks forward to coordinating Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, an event that takes place in November.

Another event being planned is a celebration for the Holi, which is a spring festival that is celebrated by Hindus.

“I think it’s a great idea. I don’t know too much about the Indian culture so it’ll be a good way for others to learn more as well,” sophomore Jordan Villa said.

The club currently has a total of 16 students, all who signed up the day of the club fair in Aug. 3.

“Anything students are interested in learning about is worth doing,” Martin said.
