Associated Students of the University La Verne Vice President Noor Wahba became president this semester after Chris Kaelberer resigned for “academic and personal reasons,” he said.
“It’s not about me anymore, it’s about the whole school,” said Kaelberer, a junior business major.
“My resignation is what’s best for the organization. I have a lot of love and respect for ASULV, and they know that I am only a phone call away,” he added.
Wahba, a junior radio broadcasting major, has been a member of ASULV since her freshman year, serving as senator at large, senate pro tempore and multicultural senator at large.
This experience has provided her with the determination to make this semester an exciting one for students.
“We are working on a book exchange to provide cheaper books for students, as well as trying to extend Davenport hours,” Wahba said.
Nicholas Sloot, newly appointed vice president and sophomore physics major, is working on “signature programs” such as giving students aluminum water bottles and providing refilling stations across campus, as well as changing Campus Center policy so that students do not get fined for staying after hours.
He also is working with other school leadership programs to help provide leadership programs that will be open to all students, and encouraged for club leaders.
Another project involves purchasing items from the bookstore such as blue books and Scantrons and providing them to students who have forgotten them.
“I’ve seen ASULV grow and tackle projects, and I’m looking forward to Noor and Nick’s new vision,” said Barbara Mulligan, director of student life.
Sloot served as senator at large and senator of the College of Arts and Sciences before becoming vice president by majority vote.
Last semester, Sloot started the ASULV scholarship with Benjamin Balderrama.
The scholarship is open to sophomores who hold positions in clubs and show leadership potential. The winner receives $2,000.
“I’m really excited. We asked ourselves, ‘What is doable?’ and now we have a lot of great projects,” Mulligan said.
ASULV will also hold forums for students to voice their opinions on projects, as well as work to increase club funding.
Although ASULV has recently filled all of its board positions, meetings that are open to all students are held every Monday at 3 p.m. in the Campus Center, Ballroom B.
Applications for next year’s board will become available on March 1, and voting will take place from April 5-7.
