Students find stress relief in psychological services

Many factors can alter a person’s mental state, including stress, depression, anxiety, substance abuse and relationships.

These factors can cause people to become distant from society and lack motivation. To address these issues, the University of La Verne offers counseling and psychological services (CAPS) for all students who might be dealing with a personal issue, regardless of what it is.

“We offer individual therapy, we offer couples therapy, and we also have a psychiatrist that offers services,” staff psychologist Albert Perez said.

Perez is one of the psychologists who helps students discuss and cope with their personal struggles.

Professionals implement and conduct these services, and every form of treatment is confidential between the students and the psychologist. These professionals dedicate their time to make sure the students are always happy and healthy. Students often share similar issues.

“Students have a difficult time adjusting to university life,” Perez said.

Sophomore anthropology major Rachel Fox struggled with depression.

“For a really long time, I kept it to myself and didn’t talk to anyone about it,” Fox said. “Over the summer I finally came forward, and I was able to see a therapist.”

Fox has since received counseling outside of the University but says she is more than willing to try out the CAPS services.
Alumna Natasha Putter never used La Verne’s counseling services.

“I think a lot of people don’t know about the counseling center,” Putter said. “I would’ve used counseling for sure, especially during finals.”

Although receiving counseling is accessible, many students still hesitate to take the steps necessary to improve their mental state. Students may be are scared to or embarrassed to pursue counseling. Others students may not even be aware they need it.

Unlike other counseling services, which require extensive paperwork and time, the Universities counseling center is fairly easy.

“We have flyers for the Counseling center all over campus,” Perez said. “Students can either call for an appointment or walk-in.”

Besides easy access, counseling is also free. Other universities and institutions do not offer complimentary services as La Verne does.

“For undergraduate and international students, there is no fee,” Perez said.

Law, graduate, and Campus Accelerated Program for Adults students do have a fee unless insured through the University.

The University’s CAPS is located at 2215 E St.
